Mad as a March hare
Meaning: crazy. Probably because hares leap around for no reason during their breeding season, which in Europe starts in March.
This month was named after Mars, the Roman god of war. March was originally the first month of the year, but when Julius Caesar reformed the calendar it became the third month. Spring begins between March 19 and 21.
Saint Patrick’s Day
March 17th. In honor of Saint Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland, the missionary who brought christianity to the Irish people in the 400’s AD. It is truly a day of celebrating Irish history, ancestry, traditions and customs.
Go green. You don’t have to wear a sweater with a giant shamrock on it though. But many people will even dye their hair green or paint some symbols on their faces.
You may play some Irish music and eat some typical food or hit an Irish pub near you.
The saying goes everyone’s at least a little bit Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. Over 30 million Americans are of Irish descent. That’s eight times the populaton of Ireland!
